Using a Steamer Basket

A steamer basket can be used to effectively steam vegetables, preserving their nutritional value rather than washing them away by boiling them. A steamer basket is a classic kitchen tool that uses the power of steam to cook food, converting any pan with a lid you own to a steaming pot. This cooking method has roots in ancient culinary traditions, especially across Asia, where it’s been used for centuries. Asian cultures historically used bamboo baskets, but the most popular steamer baskets today are stainless but silicone is another option.

To use a steamer basket, place it above boiling water, holding the food just out of reach of the liquid. As the water boils, steam rises, cooking the food gently and evenly. It’s a beautifully simple way to cook, preserving the flavors and textures of your ingredients. Not just for vegetables, a steamer basket can be used for eggs, delicate fish, dumplings or for reheating leftovers.

I use my steamer basket for several things, such as hard or soft boiling eggs, cooking small or new potatoes, as well as a variety of vegetables.
