The Muffuletta is a signature New Orleans sandwich created in 1906 by Sicilian immigrant Salvatore Lupo at Central Grocery in the French Quarter. Located on Decatur Street, Central Grocery is currently operated by a third generation of the Lupo family. The sandwich is known for its round sesame covered bread, piled with cured meats, cheeses and a signature briny olive salad.
Recently, I was delighted to learn a local bakery (in metro Detroit) sells authentic muffuletta round bread loaf (with an order 24 hours in advance) and a muffuletta sandwich by the slice, available daily. The sandwich at Bommarito Bakery on Mack Avenue in St. Clair Shores is sold with olive oil, parmesan, sharp provolone, baked & hot ham. The bakery also sells jars of Marconi muffuletta mix to be added to make a sandwich for the complete Muffuletta experience..
I added mortadella, Genoa salami, Swiss, and muffuletta salad before wrapping the sandwich in aluminum foil and warming it in an oven to perfect the sandwich.
