How to Make a Classic French 75 Cocktail

Lately, I have been watching many films and series. I am often inspired by cocktails in media, particularly in older films. This week, I watched Casablanca, one of my favorite films of all time, featuring the fight against fascism between the Nazis and the French Resistance in North Africa. Yvonne, a French woman who was a paramour of Rick, the owner of Rick’s Cafe Amercain, ordered a French 75, which inspired today’s cocktail.

The French 75 is a classic, bubbly cocktail made with gin, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and Champagne (or sparkling wine), named after a French World War I canon for its potent kick. To make it, shake gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice, strain into a champagne flute, and top with chilled Champagne, garnished with a lemon twist.
