This beloved sandwich is rumored to have been first made at a Woolworth lunch counter in Charleston, South Carolina when tuna salad inadvertently fell on a grilled cheese sandwich. Our sandwich is grilled between two pieces of bread with cheddar cheese.

An American classic, this tuna melt is easy to prepare and grilled to perfection in a cast iron skillet or any heavy pan.

Instructions

  1. Drain tuna fish and mix with mayonnaise and any additional items for flavor and crunch, such as sweet or dill relish, onion or diced celery.
  2. Layer tuna fish on bread slice and top with American cheese and second slice of bread.
  3. Melt 1/2 tablespoon butter in pan and place sandwich in pan, moving it to soak up butter. Melt remaining butter and flip sandwich to butter second side of bread. Keep heat on medium or medium-low to grill bread to golden brown on each side of sandwich.
