The Ultimate Reuben Sandwich Recipe

The Reuben sandwich is said to have been created in Omaha, considered the true birthplace, the sandwich was created around 1925 at the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska. Reuben Kulakofsky, a local grocer, ordered a sandwich with corned beef and sauerkraut during a poker game. Bernard Schimmel, the hotel’s kitchen manager, added Swiss cheese and dressing, then put it on rye. It was later put on the hotel’s menu and placed first in a national sandwich contest in 1956. This sandwich pair perfectly with our home made Russian Dressing.

Traditional Reuben sandwiches are made with corned beef, Swiss, sauerkraut and Russian dressing.

Instructions

  1. Butter bread on one side. On non buttered side, layer corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut. Pour about 1 tablespoon Russian dressing and top with second bread slice with butter side up.
  2. Heat a cast iron pan over medium heat. Grill sandwich for two minutes on each side. Slice in half and serve.
