How to Make Authentic Irish Coffee at Home

French Press

Irish coffee is a classic caffeinated alcoholic drink originating in Ireland, traditionally made with Irish whiskey, hot coffee, sugar, and a layer of lightly whipped cream floated on top.  The key to an authentic Irish coffee lies in the technique—preheating the glass, dissolving the sugar properly, and floating the cream so it can be sipped through.  This warm, balanced cocktail blends sweetness, bitterness, and richness perfectly, ideal as a dessert drink or winter warmer. Any Irish whiskey will do, but my favorite is Tullamore Dew.

Pour coffee into warmed cup. Add sugar and dissolve by stirring. Add whiskey.

Pour whipping cream to an ice filled shaker and shake. Pour whipped cream over coffee. It should cream the coffee and leave a little bit of a head of cream. Garnish with cinnamon on top of whipped cream and add cinnamon stick if you desire.
