For years I have been using a manual can opener. It fit nicely in a drawer and could come to the rescue during an extended power outage. However, the life of such a can opener can be limited. This type of can opener becomes more and more difficult to use over time.
While I still keep a manual opener on hand for power outages, I have recently upgraded to an electric can opener. It is much easier to use as I have more and more difficulty using my aging hands for difficult tasks, such as cranking a manual can opener. Years ago, I received an electric can opener for Christmas from my husband. While the gesture was wonderful, the product was difficult to use and was not consistent. It had to be at a perfect ninety degree angle to work properly.
Most can openers cut off the top inside the can crimp, which can contaminate the contents if the top of the can is not scrupulously clean when the top of the can slides into the can.
After doing some research, I selected the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener. It is not only easy to use, it cuts the top of the can off at the crimping, so the lid never falls into the food in the can. I have had this can opener for a year now and it has never failed to work properly.
